Cooperstowners in Canada

Happy New Year!

Thank you for your support of Cooperstowners in Canada.

This blog started as a passion project back in 2010 when blogs were a new thing and everyone seemed to have one.

I’m happy to report that 13 years later, in 2023, I had my most visitors in any single year.

This blog, as you can probably tell, is still very much a passion project for me, but I’m grateful so many have cared enough to read my work.

With 2024 now into its fourth day, I’ve been seeing 2023 year-end lists pop up everywhere, so I thought I’d share with you the top five most-read articles on Cooperstowners in Canada from the past year.

5. Toronto Blue Jays legend Ernie Whitt still “a big deal in Canada”

The number of views of this article I wrote about Ernie Whitt are proof that the legendary Blue Jays catcher and Canadian Baseball Hall of Famer is, indeed, still “a big deal” in Canada.

4. Mulliniks’ skills and smarts helped transform Blue Jays into contenders

Rance Mulliniks always looked like the smartest guy on the field with the Blue Jays. It turns out he probably was. He was also an underrated athlete and a key contributor who helped transform the Blue Jays into contenders. And judging by the number of views this story received, he remains extremely popular among Blue Jays fans.

3. Stratford’s Aitcheson was McGriff’s teammate 39 years ago

I was thrilled to discover that one of 2023 National Baseball Hall of Fame inductee Fred McGriff’s old teammates lived just 30 minutes away from me in Stratford, Ont. Kevin Aitcheson, who played with McGriff on the Blue Jays’ double-A Knoxville Smokies in 1984, saw McGriff belt moonshot home runs long before any of us did. Aitcheson would become an Intercounty Baseball League superstar and a brave and much respected firefighter.

2. Legendary Blue Jays broadcaster Buck Martinez named winner of the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame’s Jack Graney Award

Some told me it was long overdue, but Martinez is the 2023 winner of the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame’s Jack Graney Award for media excellence. Full disclosure: I organize the Graney Committee and wrote this press release (which I pasted as an article into my blog below) for the Canadian ball hall. I knew Martinez was popular, but the number of people that viewed this article even surprised me.

1. Humble Henke should be on the Blue Jays’ Level of Excellence

To talk to Tom Henke is to love him. That’s the near universal comment about him. I was fortunate to talk to him for more than an hour over the phone this fall. He’s the Blue Jays greatest reliever and an even greater person. For all of the reasons I shared in my article (below), he should be on the Blue Jays’ Level of Excellence. And judging by the huge response this article received, many people agree with me.
