The Boston Red Sox placed Nick Pivetta (Victoria, B.C.) on the 15-day injured list on Tuesday with a right elbow flexor strain.

The move is retroactive to April 6.

Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow described Pivetta’s injury as “mild” to reporters on Tuesday. Pete Abraham, of The Boston Globe, also reported that Pivetta could return as soon as his stint on the IL is up.

Pivetta had been outstanding in his two starts this season. Last Wednesday, he tossed five scoreless innings against the Oakland A’s and earned the win in the Sox 1-0 victory.

This came after the 6-foot-5 right-hander allowed just one run on four hits, while striking out 10, against the Seattle Mariners in his first start of the campaign on March 29. Through two starts, Pivetta owns a 0.82 ERA and has struck out 13 in 11 innings.

The Junior National Team alum, who turned 31 on Valentine’s Day, is in his eighth big league campaign and his fourth with the Sox.

He appeared in 38 games (16 starts) for the Red Sox in 2023 and tied his career-best with 10 wins and topped Canadian big league hurlers in innings pitched (142 2/3), strikeouts (183) and WAR (2.4). His 4.04 ERA was the lowest of any season in his career.

In total, he owns a 51-60 record and a 4.81 ERA in 198 major league appearances (154 starts) and has 980 strikeouts in 894 2/3 innings.

To replace Pivetta, the Red Sox called up left-hander Brennan Bernardino from triple-A Worcester.
