The Toronto Blue Jays have purchased the contract of Canadian right-hander Evan Elliott from the independent Frontier League’s Ottawa Titans.
The Titans made the announcement on Friday.
Born in Toronto, the 23-year-old Elliott signed with the Titans in November after spending parts of three seasons in the Texas Rangers’ organization. Elliott also made 11 appearances for the Intercounty Baseball League’s Toronto Maple Leafs last summer.
The 6-foot-4, 235-pound righty was chosen by the Rangers in the 15th round of the 2021 MLB draft. In 15 relief appearances with the Rangers’ Rookie Ball Arizona Complex League affiliate over the past three seasons, he posted a 4.70 ERA and struck out 24 batters in 15 1/3 innings.
Prior to his pro career, Elliott honed his skills with the Etobicoke Rangers, Ontario Terriers, Prairie Baseball Academy and Junior National Team. He also pitched for the Kokomo Jackrabbits of the Northwoods League, a summer collegiate circuit, in 2021.
Elliott will head to the Blue Jays’ minor league spring training camp in Dunedin, Fla.
By my count, he is the fifth Canadian pitcher in either the major or minor league camp with the Blue Jays this spring. Right-handers Jordan Romano (Markham, Ont.) and Zach Pop (Brampton, Ont.) are in big league camp, while Elliott will join southpaws Adam Macko (Stony Plain, Alta.) and Connor O’Halloran (Mississauga, Ont.) in minor league camp.
