Brewers trade Toro to A’s

The Milwaukee Brewers have traded Abraham Toro (Longueuil, Que.) to the Oakland A’s in exchange for right-hander Chad Patrick.

The A’s announced the transaction on Tuesday night.

After going 5-for-15 (.333 batting average) in four games for Canada at the World Baseball Classic, Toro, 26, was impressive in his limited major league action with the Brewers in 2023. In nine games, he went 8-for-18, good for a .444 batting average with two home runs and nine RBIs.

He spent the bulk of the campaign with the triple-A Nashville Sounds where he hit .291 with a .374 on-base percentage with eight home runs and 58 RBIs in 96 contests.

Originally selected in the fifth round of the 2016 MLB draft by the Houston Astros, the ABC Academy alum made his big league debut on August 22, 2019. He played parts of three seasons with the Astros before being traded to the Seattle Mariners.

In 2022, for the second time in his major league career, he reached double-digits in home runs, belting 10 in 109 games for the Mariners. The versatile Canuck also added 36 runs, 60 hits, 13 doubles and 22 walks. Toro was also one of the Mariners’ top pinch-hitters, going 4-for-12 (.333 batting average) during the regular season.

On December 2, 2022 he was dealt to the Brewers by the Mariners, along with Jesse Winker for Kolten Wong.

The A’s will be Toro’s fourth major league organization.

Patrick, a fourth-round pick in 2021, will head to the Brewers. The 6-foot-1 righty was acquired by the A’s from the Arizona Diamondbacks at the 2023 trade deadline. He combined to go 4-11 with a 5.59 ERA in 27 appearances (26 starts) between double-A and triple-A in 2022. In 124 innings, the 25-year-old had 129 strikeouts. He has toed the rubber for three professional seasons.
