Some Canadian links to the World Series Champion San Francisco Giants

There were no Canadian players on the World Champion San Francisco Giants, but with a little digging, I uncovered that several members of the organization have links to The Great White North:

 Jeff Mallett, a principal owner of the Giants, was born in Vancouver. The former Yahoo! president has been part of the Giants ownership team since 2002.

 Reliever Guillermo Mota was the only active Giant to have toiled for the Montreal Expos, suiting up for ill-fated club from 1999 to 2001. He also enjoyed stints with the Triple-A Ottawa Lynx in those same three seasons.

 Mota is one of three ex-Ottawa Lynx on the Giants’ World Series roster. The other two were utility infielder Mike Fontenot, a former Orioles first round pick who suited up for Ottawa in 2004 and back-up catcher Eli Whiteside, another ex-Oriole farmhand who competed for the Lynx in 2005 and 2006.

 Giants hitting coach Hensley “Bam-Bam” Meulens played 16 games for the Montreal Expos in 1997. That same season, he also played for the Triple-A Ottawa Lynx. In 1998, while in the White Sox organization, he suited up for two games with the Triple-A Calgary Cannons.

 Giants pitching coach Dave Righetti pitched for the Toronto Blue Jays for 13 games during the 1994 season, compiling an 0-1 record and a gaudy 6.75 ERA.

 Giants bullpen coach Mark Gardner was drafted by the Montreal Expos in the eighth round of the 1985 draft. He spent parts of four seasons with the Expos from 1989 to 1992. He also pitched one game for the Triple-A Edmonton Trappers, while in the Marlins organization, in 1994.

  1. Righetti was certainly at the end of his career when he pitched in Toronto. It’s good to see him enjoying a second life with such a talented pitching staff in SF. And I believe this is his first World Series championship.

Great detective work, as usual, Kevin.
